The Color of Fall on Atwood Lake, Ohio

October 31 and the goblins will be out tonight. Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast is located about 3 miles outside of town, so even though it is well lit, we seldom have trick or treaters. That’s okay because this year it falls on a Saturday and we will be filled with overnight guests celebrating the last weekend of October. Soon the fall will give way to winter and the snow will begin to fall on the pine trees. It really is quite beautiful.

The other day we had a light rain and when the clouds began to move, the sun began to shine once again. I think this was a photographers dream for a few moments. I happened to have my camera in hand and quickly ran outside to take a few pictures. Everything was perfect; the overcast sky, the light trickling in from the sun and soon there was a rainbow as well. Everything turned a bright yellow/gold – it was breath taking. In fact several of our guests also talked about natures light show that early evening. So I wanted to share these photos with you.

Many years ago we traveled by car to Dallas to visit family. We drove through a rain storm on the highway. The rain stopped, the sun came out and there were three rainbows poised in the sky. Cars on both side of the highway stopped to look. It was awesome. I wish we had been camera ready at the moment.

Do you have a favorite scenic photo you would like to share? Would love to see it.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda

Interesting Guests Packages Things to do

Grilfriends getaway at our Ohio bed and breakfast

Over the years Whispering Pines has been host to many girlfriend getaways because we created a very appealing weekday package to take advantage of. Since I’ve started to blog, I thought I would share two different groups, one with four friends and the other with eight women. We always look forward to these occasions and because of all the laughter we know they are having a great time. Who wouldn’t enjoy a complete body massage, a welcome tray of cheese, crackers and a beverage, two lovely dinners, a delicious breakfast and roasting s’mores out at the fire pit. Bill has just about completed the sun room, a perfect place for groups to hang out without disturbing other house guests. Many a card game and board games have been won and lost and memories relived.

The group on the left were friends from the Columbus, Ohio area. Darlene, Linda, Nancy and Jennie stayed two nights. When they arrived they enjoyed their welcome tray and promptly made a decision to spend the following day in the Amish area. They were a lovely group and enjoyed their time together. We enjoyed having them.

The group of women on the right actually stayed four nights. Their story is quite unique. Carol, Ann Marie, Sharon, Mary, Edna, Linda, Rahjini and Carolyn began their history in a little superb of Pittsburgh – they were neighbors, young mothers raising their children. Twenty-seven years ago they decided to take a trip and thus was born the “Escapees”. They truly were the pioneers of the “girlfriends getaway” concept. Even though they have all moved, some as far away as Texas, Connecticut, Maryland and Ohio, this is a yearly event in their lives. This group took advantage of the activities in Canton, the Amish area, loved the Alpaca farm and went clay pigeon shooting. They even allowed me the honor of looking at their sacred memory book which began 27 years ago. We enjoyed them as much as they enjoyed being at Whispering Pines.

Let me know about your girlfriends getaways and how we can customize your package for your great escape.

Ohio Motorcycle Trails near Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast

Summer is over, fall is vibrant still, but disappearing fast. Today we had our first frost at a cold 29 degrees, and it’s only the middle of October. Very soon all motorcycles will be stored for the winter months.

During the warm weather Whispering Pines is host to many couples riding motorcycles. Two couples pictured above visit every year. This year Mindy and Jeff rode in on a brand new Harley Davidson Road King that was absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately it did rain, but they will ride in rain or shine. Dianne and Steve also ride a Harley Classic and they were fortunate with sunshine each day.

One of the attractions for motorcyclists is the fact that Carroll County is one of only four counties in all of Ohio that has only two lane roads. It’s a rural area with very windy roads lined with fields of corn and wheat and beautiful horses. It really is so much fun to ride surrounded by the spectacular scenery.

We invite all riders to visit Whispering Pines. Our long driveway and parking area is paved so you don’t have to ride on gravel. You can store your bike overnight in our barn and if it should rain we’ll even let you use our car to go for dinner. Did you know that you can rent a motorcycle? Visit Adventure Harley-Davidson in Dover.

Bill use to ride up until a few years ago, but that’s another story. Needless to say he really enjoys seeing all the motorcycles when they arrive. In fact just a couple of weeks ago, we stopped in a Harley dealer to look – but didn’t buy. Maybe another time.

Email us a photo of your bike and of your most memorable trip.

Looking forward to seeing all of you next summer.

Fall Foliage

I’m always a bit sad when summer fades away, but at the same time I love the fall season. The leaves change color everyday as they get brighter and more vibrant. I think they are just about at their peak with the reds, oranges, and browns mixed in with the green pine trees. There are 28 miles of shoreline at Atwood Lake and they are all covered with the most spectacular display at this time of the year. The photo says it all – what do you think about our fall foliage at Whispering Pines?

Have you noticed how the sounds change when it gets cooler. The boats retreat and there is a lot less activity on the lake. It’s the perfect time to throw on your sweatshirt and take a walk in the park with the sound of crunchy leaves under each step in the crispy cool air. When we have the time, we’ll return to a cup of hot apple cider and a chocolate chip cookie.

Even though fall means the end of water activities, there are still plenty of things to do in the area. Why not consider horseback riding through acres and acres of gorgeous fall colors, or the Algonquin Mill Festival located in Carrollton. Golfing is still available and don’t forget that last motorcycle ride through the gently rolling hills of Carroll County.

Bill and I would love to share the Atwood Lake Region with you this time of year. We have nine guest rooms to choose from – all with beautiful views.

Events Packages

Small Wedding Ideas

If you are looking for a small place to hold a very intimate wedding ceremony for a small group of special friends, you may want to consider Whispering Pines. We off two packages for six to 40 guests in a beautiful setting overlooking picturesque Atwood Lake. Most of the wedding ceremonies are preformed outside wherever the bride and groom choose. They have been at the upper waterfalls on a raised deck, under the pine trees, in the brick courtyard and even on the bridge over the stream. In cold weather months the ceremony can be in the Victorian parlor and the larger great room.
This September James and Alisha had twelve very close friends attend their wedding ceremony. They selected the wedding cake reception. Instead of serving the cake at the Inn, they all had dinner at the Lighthouse Bistro, located on the west end of the lake, and the restaurant served the wedding cake for dessert. It was a lovely day with the sun beaming down on two very happy newlyweds. Photos were taken by Melissa Brenneman.

The weather was very cooperative this year and allow for another gorgeous day for a wedding at Whispering Pines. The groom is a very casual person and wore a Hawaiian shirt. The bride looked beautiful with her two children standing besides them as they exchanged wedding vows. They selected the full reception and many of the guests stayed overnight as well.

Call me toll free at 866-4lakevu and I’ll be happy to help you plan your very special day.

Scarecrows

Every year at this time scarecrows come out of hiding. It’s a sure sign of autumn, falling leaves and Halloween.

The 7th annual “Scarecrows on the Square” is a community wide project that takes place at Public Square in downtown Carrollton. Any individual, family, school, civic organization, or company is encouraged to participate. Awards are given for first, second and third place in several different categories. The construction of the scarecrows is actually built at the square during a 3-hour period and will remain on display through October 19th.

They are all so creative in design that it is quite difficult to select the winners. I have included a couple of photos. What do you think? Why not come to Carroll County to see them and tour the area this time of the year – the colors are beautiful, the air is crisp and we are waiting to serve you hot apple cider at Whispering Pines.
