Atwood Lake Bed and Breakfast Carroll County Ohio lodging Packages Things to do

Northeast Ohio Getaway Package

We have visited the  ‘National First Ladies Library’ a couple of times and enjoyed the exhibits and guided tours, and I know you will too.  It’s located just a short 1/2 hour drive from Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast, so why not plan a getaway visiting the historic site and staying overnight in a cozy guest room at our Ohio bed and breakfast.

The National First Ladies’ Library is housed in two buildings. One is the Ida Saxton McKinley Historic Home and the other building, just a block north, is the Education & Research Center where the museum is housed.  The house itself is a wonderful example of the victorian era.  Many years ago, it was destined to be torn down, but a group of dedicated people from the Canton, Ohio area saved it.  It’s the perfect site for the Nations First Ladies to reside.

The name of the current exhibit, America’s Goodwill Ambassadors: First Ladies Travel the World – is showing now through November 5, 2010.

This exhibit concentrates on the important, but non-political role First Ladies play in international diplomatic relationships for the United States. This exhibit features First Ladies Elizabeth Monroe, Harriet Lane, Helen Taft, Lou Hoover, Jackie Kennedy, Pat Nixon, Rosalynn Carter, and Hillary Clinton. On display will be gifts given to First Ladies from various countries around the world on loan from Presidential Libraries and Museums.

Stay Monday – Thursday and receive two free admission tickets for this exhibit.  We’ll also help you plan the rest of your afternoon in downtown Canton.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda

Quilt Show – Hoover Historical Center – Canton, Ohio

“Sew Many Memories” Quilt Show at the Hoover Historical Center in Canton, Ohio

This blog was posted by Canton Stark County.

Visitors to Walsh University’s Hoover Historical Center will have the opportunity to view a unique showing of quilts and various textiles that reflect North Canton history from the early 1800s through 2008.

Combining pieces from the Center’s collections with works from the North Canton Heritage Society, coverlets made by New Berlin resident Isaac Sheaffer in the 1800s and also by Benjamin Lichty will be among the textiles on display.

A full size signature crazy quilt with New Berlin residents’ names embroidered and painted on beautiful fabric pieces with fancy stitchery, will be available for viewing and guests to search for family names. A display of fancy stitches and fabric swatches are components of crazy quilts. Signature quilts were sometimes made as a fundraiser for a church, missionaries or even to support troops during a war by either selling the quilt at an auction or people paid to have their name included on the quilt. Also called “friendship quilts” it was common for a signature quilt to be given to a member of the community as a memento of an important community event.

Among the vintage pieces displayed will be a framed floral needlepoint made by the late Mary Hoover Price on loan courtesy North Canton Public Library’s The Little Art Gallery and a tablecloth signed by World War II veterans.

This unique showing will be available for viewing through October. Center docents will be conducting tours hourly, at 1, 2, 3, & 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

Why not combine this quilt show with an overnight stay at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast.  Stay Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night and receive two free tickets.  I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda

What is Select Registry? Ohio Bed and Breakfast explains

Many of our guests at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast have never heard of Select Registry.  We are honored to be a member since 2006.  At this time there are only eight Inns in Ohio.  I thought I would give an explanation as to what it is all about.  We give each of our guests a Select Registry directory book to take home with them to use as a reference for a future getaway.

What is Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America?

The association was founded in the late 1960’s by Norman Simpson, the “father of Country Inn travel in American”. In his pioneering book, “Country Inns and Back Roads”, Simpson noted that each member inn is original and unique, a reflection of the personalities and tastes of the individual innkeeper-owners. This was never intended to be a total guide to country inns in the United Stated and Canada, but rather a carefully selected group in inns or bed and breakfasts. The purpose was to encourage travelers to visit and to experience this unique type of personal hospitality. When Norman Simpson first compiled a directory of inns, there were twelve properties, primarily in the New England area. Today they represent nearly 400 of the finest country inns, bed and breakfasts, and unique small hotels from the United States and Canada – the very best the travel industry has to offer.

Select Registry carries out a quality assurance inspection for each of its nearly 400 inns. This program involves independent inspectors – not employees of Select Registry – with years of experience in the hospitality industry. The inspectors arrive unidentified, spend the night, and evaluate the inn on a detailed point system, which translates into a pass/fail grade for the inn. Inns applying for membership are inspected, as are existing members on a periodic schedule. Not all inns have what it takes to pass the inspections, and this process provides a guarantee to the traveling public that a Select Registry inn is in a class of its own. A recent internet directory identified over 20,000 country inns and bed and breakfasts in the United States and Canada. A select few of those are members of the Select Registry.

THE QUILL

What is the meaning of the Select Registry Quill?

The historical registry ‘Quill’ is the original instrument of guest registration and has been incorporated into our association’s graphic identity. You’ll find the symbol in the guide book, carved into our coffee mugs, printed on our wine glasses, embroidered on our robes and on all printed and web material. It is a brand you can count on when you see it.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda
