When you live in a beautiful area such as Atwood Lake where Whispering Pines is located or another place close by in Ohio, you may not realize the dedicated efforts that sometimes go on behind the scenes to protect the very areas you love to visit and admire.
The Ohio & Erie Canal Coalition (OECC) is a non-profit organization solely dedicated to the protection and development of the Ohio & Erie Canal Heritage Canal. This canal was the most reliable way for early settlers to transport and ship products. It is such a unique part of the heritage here and the true beginnings of the surrounding communities. Whether through publications, educational programs or special events, the OECC wants to ensure that the natural, historical and recreational resources throughout the corridor are preserved. A wonderful effort that aims to raise a lot of support every year for the canal is the Canal Boat Captain’s Ball, which is happening June 14, 2014 at the Fairlawn Country Club in Fairlawn, OH.
The canal currently provides opportunities for people and families to go hiking, bicycling, fishing, birding, canoeing, and horseback riding. The Towpath Trail in particular is an important part of history. The trail and the canal actually took 7 years to be constructed, was dug out by hand by immigrants and was originally 309 miles long. The trail area today in Cuyahoga Valley National Park actually witnesses over 2 million visitors every year!
The Canal Boat Captain’s Ball is a top-notch fundraiser that benefits the OECC and efforts to build the Towpath Trail through northeast Ohio. The evening also serves as the perfect opportunity to thank a member of the community for their support of the Towpath Trail, whom this year is Frances Seiberling Buchholzer. She has been instrumental in advocating for preserving historic lands and expanding parks.
The Captain’s Ball also features a live and silent auction with everything from vacation homes, to sports tickets, to baskets of wine and cheese. In support of this wonderful cause, Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast has donated two nights lodging to the auction as well, which is a great incentive to be a part of it all!
