When you enjoy being out on the water on a beautiful day, there is nothing more relaxing than throwing in your line with a gorgeous setting around you. There are two main lakes that each offer great fishing in our area: Atwood Lake and Leesville Lake.

Known for its fishing and sailing, Atwood Lake takes up 1,540 square acres and has a max depth of 30 feet. Fish that you will find here include black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, saugeye, and white crappie. It has two marinas with public boat launches, boat rentals, bait and licenses. Our bed and breakfast, Whispering Pines is located right on Atwood Lake, making it very convenient for our guests to get out in a boat if they want to try their hand at catching “the big one.”

Leesville is another popular lake taking up 1,000 square acres that also has two marinas and the same services as Atwood. This beautiful body of water also has a depth of 30 feet and is known for its record size “muskies” (muskellunge). The muskellunge is a large and elusive fish–it has been known to eat other fish, ducklings and even small muskrats! They usually hang out in weed beds. You’ll also find channel catfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie and bluegill biting at your line.

Tips for Successful Fishing

For proper catch-and-release make sure to use artificials rather than live bait. Keep the fish in the water if possible but when it is large and must be pulled out, support the belly so you don’t injure internal organs. Use hooks that are barbless so it makes it easier to remove the hook. Early morning, late evening and overcast days when the light is low is said to be the best times to fish, especially for muskie. If you are going to try for the big ones then you should be prepared with a 7 to 8 foot heavy duty fishing pole and a 20 to 25 pond line. You’ll also need a wire leader that is 75 to 100 pound test. The monsters will get away if you don’t have the right equipment!
