Dante’s Inferno: The Illustrations of Amos Nattini
August 25 – December 1, 2014
Dante Alighieri, often referred to as simply Dante, was a major Italian poet of the Middle Ages. He was born in Florence, Italy and is the author of The Divine Comedy, which is considered a true masterwork in the world of literature. Alongside Shakespeare, Dante is considered among the greatest writers to have lived. In 1921, the Istituto Nazionale Dantesco in Milan wanted to honor the 600th anniversary of The Divine Comedy and they commissioned Amos Nattini to produce illustrations for this great work. It took him twenty years to complete three volumes of paintings. His delicate illustrations, which were made with watercolors and oils, were much acclaimed.
Starting August 25th, 2014 The Canton Museum of Art will be presenting Dante’s Inferno: The Illustrations of Amos Nattini. This new exhibition will be displayed for the first time in the Atrium Gallery of the Birk Center for the Arts, at Walsh University. It is free and will be open to the public daily from 8 am – 9 pm.
Intent to Deceive: Fakes and Forgeries in the Art World
August 28 – October 26, 2014
You can find a “fake” version of the real thing in almost every retail avenue out there. You may have even bought something only to find out later that it was indeed a “forgery.” Intent to Deceive: Fakes and Forgeries in the Art World is an extremely interesting exhibition coming to the museum that will truly put your detective skills to the test. The exhibition will include five of the world’s most infamous art forgers, or con-artists, if you will. You will learn about each artist’s career, explanations on how they were able to make their incredible artwork, and how art experts were able to find the truth using modern technology. You will be able to compare nearly 50 fakes next to 12 original pieces from some of the world’s most accomplished artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. There is also an opening night celebration on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 6-9pm.
