The Nutcracker Ballet, Canton, Ohio

Combine an overnight at our Ohio Bed and Breakfast, Whispering Pines with this delightful ballet in Canton, a short 30 drive.

Under the artistic direction of Cassandra Crowley Canton Ballet will present its sparkling holiday showpiece, The Nutcracker, in four performances on December 10, 11 and 12 at Canton’s Palace Theatre. Performance times are Friday, 7:30 pm; Saturday, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm; and Sunday, 2:00 pm.

Canton Ballet has offered its beloved audience favorite since its first public performance in 1968. The tale of The Nutcracker, written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816, has fascinated and inspired artists, composers and audiences for almost 200 years. Its first presentation as a classic ballet took place at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892.

One of the brightest stars on northeast Ohio’s annual holiday scene, Canton Ballet’s The Nutcracker is presented in lavish sets and glittering costumes to the gorgeous music of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with choreography by Crowley, Canton Ballet choreographer in residence Angelo Lemmo and former assistant artistic director Carol Hageman.

In two acts The Nutcracker tells the story of a Christmas Eve in 1860 at the home of young Clara and her family during their holiday party. The mysterious magician Drosselmeyer makes a surprise visit and presents Clara with a very special Nutcracker doll. Thus begins the amazing journey of Clara and her Nutcracker prince—from a frenzied battle between life-sized toy soldiers and mice through the kingdom of Snow to the Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Admission is $18-22 and tickets may be purchased online at cantonballet.com or by telephone at 330-455-6880.

The beautifully restored historic Palace Theatre is located at 605 Market Ave. N. in downtown Canton.

Walking Tour Massillon Ohio

This weekend local historian Margy Vogt, will lead two historic public walking tours in Massillon, one of Massillon’s historic Fourth Street on Saturday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. and one of downtown Massillon on Sunday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m.

The Historic Fourth Street Walking Tour is a leisurely stroll, which includes stories about former residents and exterior architectural highlights of the town’s grandest old neighborhood, it takes about two hours. Fourth Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The houses on Fourth Street, which span more than a century of architectural excellence (1830s to 1930s), were home to Massillon’s entrepreneurs and bankers, to prominent families who hosted President McKinley, and to humanitarians who harbored fugitive slaves.

The Historic Downtown Massillon Walking Tour will be a stroll through the history and architecture of Massillon’s 184-year-old downtown to learn about the canal, streetcars, early businesses, National Register sites, and the people who built the town. Stories will include the fire that destroyed First Methodist Church, human flies, the Washington’s birthday flood, and the airplane that was built in the upper floor of a downtown building.

Why not stay at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast and we’ll include the $5 fee for the tour.
