Finding Friends at Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast

We have always been fortunate to attract beautiful male and female Hummingbirds.  Sometimes we have a few and at other times we have had up to a dozen.  They buzz around all day long humming their wings and fighting with each other.  But the strangest thing happend the other day.  A gorgeous Baltimore Oriole stopped by to check out our bed and breakfast for building a nest.  He spotted the Hummingbird feeder and enjoyed sipping on the sugar water.   One of our overnight guests had his camera in hand and was able to snap a picture of the two of them dining together and forming a friendship.  He stayed for a couple of days and then disappeared to set up his nest elsewhere.

Click on the image to get a larger view and see the bright orange color of the Baltimore Oriole.

Special Stories from Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast

When summer arrives at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast we always have guests who arrive on their motorcycles.  Carroll County is the perfect place for taking in beautiful scenery on winding roads.  Our Inn is located in one of only four counties in Ohio that only has 2-lane highways.

My husband Bill always takes the time to look at the motorcycles wondering why he doesn’t have one himself.  Well this awesome Heritage Softail Harley was Bill’s for several years.  He rode when he got the chance, but not as often as he would have liked.  A couple years ago he realized he needed a back hoe more then a bike and traded it in for another set of wheels.  It doesn’t go as fast, but it’s a pretty color yellow and it gets the job done.  Notice, he is still smiling.  Who knows, maybe when we retire, you will find Bill riding again.

I’ll look forward to seeing you soon,
Linda

Our Ohio Bed & Breakfast is located in award winning Carroll County

Look at the sunset over Atwood Lake – it is absolutely gorgeous and very serene.  Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast is located on the north side of the lake overlooking the beautiful shoreline with its colorful trees.  The Inn is in Carroll County with its gently rolling hills and bucolic farm land, lovely scenery and only 2-lane roads to drive on.  Instantly you are transformed to a relaxed state of mind.

And that brings us to the honorable award that Carroll County was just awarded.  The Convention and Visitors Bureau was just notified that the county has been named the ‘Most Relaxing Weekend Getaway in Ohio’ in the Best of . . . Ohio competition.  The County will be featured along with other winners on a segment on the ‘Travel Channel’ and on CBS TV affiliates.  We are all very proud of our county and we are looking forward to watching the two-minute segment when it airs.  The videographer was treated to a ride on the Atwood Queen where he shot footage of the Atwood Resort and Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast.  He also visited the Alpaca Farm, BTM Sporting Clays,
Bluebird Farm and the Scarecrows on the square.

If you are looking for a relaxing brief getaway please be sure to check out the guestrooms at the Inn and we’ll direct you to all the activities Carroll County has to offer.

I’ll look forward to seeing you soon,
Linda

Winter Wonderland at Atwood Lake, Dellroy Ohio Bed & Breakfast

The snow is falling fast at Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast. I can’t remember seeing snowflakes the size of quarters. It really is a beautiful sight, especially when the pine trees are covered with snow and there are not any foot prints in the snow yet. I’m sure by tomorrow morning there will be lots of deer tracks. One can hardly see the lake and the opposite shoreline is in a complete whiteout.

Bill is outside shoveling the walkway and plowing the drive for our overnight guests, so he has a different perspective on snow. Gratefully it is not too terribly cold.

My favorite activity when it’s snowing is being in the kitchen, and then taking a break sitting on the sun porch enjoying Mother Nature. I baked an extra batch of chocolate chip cookies today and apricot biscuits for breakfast tomorrow. Hot chocolate is available as well as a huge variety of tea. It’s a perfect night for getting cozy in front of the glow of the fireplace reading a good book and having a quiet conversation with your loved one.

The two pictures above were taken about 1 and ½ hours apart, so you can see how fast the snow was falling.

What is your favorite inside or outdoor snowy day activity?

Come visit us before spring for a total rest and relaxation getaway – we’d love to have you.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda

WinterGreen Vacations – Your winter vacation can help protect American wilderness areas.

From the Sierras to the Smokies, from “sea to shining sea” and all the wild places in between, America’s wilderness is an indelible part of our national heritage and an important legacy to pass on to our children.

Pristine, undeveloped wilderness is important – not only in its own right, but for the clean air and water, recreation, and wildlife habitat it provides all of us.

But these wild places are constantly under pressure and need protection in order to thrive.

And now there is a new program that makes it easy for winter travelers to support those remaining wilderness areas – WinterGreen Vacations.

The idea is simple. Stay at Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast in Dellroy, Oh from January through March, 2010, and they will donate 2% of your lodging of two-day stays or longer to The Wilderness Society to protect these spectacular places.

The beta-test of the program is starting with a select group of small, eco-friendly and independently owned inns and Bed and Breakfast’s across the country. The goal is be national in 2011, with hopefully thousands of such eco-sensitive lodging facilities participating.

Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast is a small 9-room inn overlooking the beautiful lush landscape and scenic views of Atwood Lake in the rolling hills of Carroll County, a naturally beautiful environment. Their warm and inviting guest rooms feature a 2-person whirlpool tub, electric fireplace and private balcony for admiring the hillside views, lake, gardens and wildlife. The man made ponds, waterfalls and streams are its own eco-system where the fish live in recycled chemical free water cleared with natural barley. They are also a Select Registry Inn, which represents only 400 quality assured, inspected inns and Bed & Breakfasts in North America

“We are all committed to protecting these wild, beautiful areas of our country,” said Linda Horn, owner of Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast. “And we are honored to work with The Wilderness Society in what we hope will become a major annual program generating strong financial support for their outstanding work. We are excited to support the wilderness treasures of America through our participation in WinterGreen Vacations.”

Founded in 1935, The Wilderness Society’s mission is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places. From writing and passing the landmark Wilderness Act to winning lasting protection for more than 109 million acres of permanent wilderness across the country to date, The Wilderness Society is America’s premier public lands conservation organization. TWS and its 500,000 members and supporters are dedicated to protecting America’s wilderness and to developing a nationwide network of these iconic wild lands through public education, scientific analysis and advocacy.

“The Wilderness Society is always looking for innovative opportunities to increase public awareness and generate support for America’s wild places,” said Sally Adams, Vice-President of Communications and Marketing, The Wilderness Society. “We’re very excited about working with WinterGreen Vacations to pilot what could become an important program to help people not only enjoy this country’s beautiful wilderness areas, but to support them in a direct way.”

We hope you can take part in this program and we look forward to donating a portion of your lodging. If you are not able to visit during these months, I would enjoy hearing from you regarding your thoughts on this program.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda

Ohio Bed & Breakfast Snow Package

Woke up to another day of snow falling in the Atwood Lake Region at Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast. I’m sure we would all rather have sunshine and 75 degree temperatures, but this is January and the season calls for snow. I took this photo from the deck of the inn looking out at the barn. It really is beautiful. Soon there will be deer tracks all over including right on our brick patio adjacent to the light post.

Winter season is a great time to visit Whispering Pines because you can accomplish a real rest, relax and rejuvenation. Choose your guestroom and bring a novel to read, we have lots of board games to play and soft music to listen to. Order a massage with a 20% off coupon, we’ll include a 20% off coupon for dinner at the restaurant of your choice and offer you a complimentary bottle of non-alcoholic wine and small cheese plate for your evening snack.

If you want some activity, the walking trails at the park are open and you can schedule horseback riding in the afternoon. Warther’s Museum is always a treat and visiting Lehman’s Hardware.

How do you like to spend a snowy wintry day? If you have other suggestions for combining a snowy day package at Whispering Pines, let me know and I’ll be happy to customize one for you.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda

Vineyard

One of the joy’s of being innkeepers is meeting people with unique and unusual jobs. Cindy and John Moorhead along with their son, Mike, fall right in that category.
The Moorhead’s own a vineyard in Erie, Pa. They do not make the wine, they grow the grapes that get sold to winery’s mainly in Pa. and N.Y. The Moorhead Farms actually grow twenty-two separate varieties of wine grapes: Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Vidal Blanc, Cayuga, Pinot Gris, Traminette, Pinot Blanc, Dornfelder, Valvin Muscat, Corot Noir, Noiret, Baccus, Merlot, Chardonnay, Viognier, Chambourcin, Vignoles, Niagara, Steuben, Carmine and Concords. Some of them are white and some are dark blue and they all taste divine. We were spoiled to the point that it will now be difficult to buy grapes from the market.

We know the grapes are wonderful because we were invited to see their operation during harvest. We toured their acres of grapes and did a complete “grape tasting”. Each and every variety had a distinct and aromatic flavor. We found this so much more fun than a wine tasting, and we knew we were being treated very special. Even though the day we chose to visit was cold and raining grape harvesting continued. Both Bill and I enjoyed riding the harvester. This huge machine traverses the vines, shakes the grapes loose allowing them to move up the conveyor belt where someone hand picks out the larger stems and branches. They are then dumped into a cart traveling right beside the harvester. It’s amazing how smoothly the operation runs.

After a few hours Cindy served us a wonderful hot meal with a bottle of wine (their grapes) and an absolutely delicious grape pie made from their more than a dozen table varieties of grapes. Her pie could without a doubt win a blue ribbon. John and Mike were still harvesting into the night because a truck was ready to drive the grapes to a New York Winery.

We had a great day and wonderful memories of our time spent with friends we met at our bed and breakfast. We left with several baskets of grapes and when we arrived home Bill made several jars of grape preserves.

We arrived later in the evening at The Bootby Inn, fellow Select Registry innkeepers. I highly recommend their Inn when traveling through Erie, Pa. The night before we stayed at the Buhl Mansion, another Select Registry Inn located in Sharon, Pa. Another Inn I would highly recommend. We had a good night’s sleep, nice conversation and a lovely breakfast served to us at both places.

Well after all this wine talk I think I’ll open a bottle of ‘Traminette’ wine from Mazza Vineyards in North East, Pa. Yes, grapes from the Moorhead farm. Do you think I can get Bill to take a break? For sure if I add some cheese and crackers.

Have you had the opportunity to go on a private tour of a vineyard? Would love to hear about your experience. Send me a comment to share with my readers.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda
